Re-imagining the 8tracks first time user experience (FTUX) was a fun and iterative process. The three-month project involved both qualitative and quantitative research to inform the end-result. What started with a shared vision amongst the team was validated and tweaked with both user research, and usability research, along with A/B testing to validate the ideas along the way. The goals of the revised FTUX were to engage new users and gather taste preferences, which would, in turn, help 8tracks recommend more relevant playlists to users, which may lead to improved retention.
We designed similar experiences for all three platforms (iOS, Android, and Web), and after initial research, we transitioned to visual design (by the talented Greg Korn). Once visual design was polished, we worked closely with engineering to build the updated FTUX.
